1 Killed İn Kenya Protest

26.01.2015 20:19

Senator Ntutu told AA police used live ammunition to disperse demonstrators.

One person was reportedly killed on Monday during protests that were held in Kenya's Narok County.

"I can confirm that police shot one [person] dead in the demonstration we organized today," Senator Stephen Ole Ntutu told The Anadolu Agency.

Ntutu said ten people had also been injured.

Hundreds had reportedly gathered on the streets of Narok town on Monday to demonstrate against alleged corruption and the misappropriation of funds by the local government.

According to Senator Ntutu, police used live ammunition to disperse demonstrators.

Police were not immediately available for comment and the allegations could not be independently verified.

Narok Police Chief Paul Letting was seriously injured in the melee and has since been hospitalized.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Nkaissery, who had banned the planned demonstration, said the government would investigate alleged corruption.

"It is regrettable that instead of local leaders following laid down legal procedures for dealing with alleged corruption, they chose unnecessary confrontation," he said in a subsequent statement.

"To ensure that law and order is maintained, police have been directed to commence investigations with immediate effect and charge those found culpable," Nkaissery added.

Narok is one of Kenya's richest counties, with most of its revenues generated though the world-famous Masai Mara game park.

However, there have been concerns by local residents over the management of the revenues.
