The Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Gaza-based Palestinian faction Hamas, announced Friday that it had killed ten Israeli soldiers and injured an unspecified number of others in an ambush in the northern Gaza Strip's town of Beit Hanoun.
In a brief statement, the Brigades said its fighters had targeted a 15-man Israeli infantry unit at a checkpoint in eastern Beit Hanoun with rocket-propelled grenades, killing at least ten of them in subsequent clashes.
"The soldiers' remains were scattered around the checkpoint," the statement read, adding that Israeli paramedics had been unable to reach injured soldiers.
Friday's announcement raises the number of Israeli soldiers that the Brigades claims to have killed to 86 since July 7, when Israel began its onslaught on Gaza, which was widened last week to include ground operations.
Israel, for its part, has so far confirmed the death of 35 soldiers and three civilians since the offensive began almost three weeks ago.
Israel's onslaught has so far killed 636 Palestinians, the vast majority of them civilians, and injured over 5400 others, many critically, according to Palestinian health officials.
Israel's "Operation Protective Edge," now in its 19th day, is the self-proclaimed Jewish state's third major offensive against the blockaded Gaza Strip in the last six years.
