At least 10 schoolchildren were killed and 22 others were injured when a bus carrying them collided head-on with a truck in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, according to a police official.
Most victims were aged between four and 11. The driver of the bus also lost his life in the accident in the state's Etah district, police official Etah Bisarjan Singh Yadav said.
"Ten children lost their lives at the accident site. Injured have been admitted at a nearby hospital," Yadav said.
The bus was said to be carrying around 50 children.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the incident.
"Anguished by the tragic accident in UP's Etah district. I share the pain of the bereaved families & condole passing away of young children," Modi tweeted.
Eyewitnesses blamed the accident on thick fog in the area; however, officials were yet to confirm the cause. -
