13 Killed 'By Mistake' İn Coalition Strikes İn Yemen

21.04.2015 10:48

At least 13 people were killed "by mistake" in two airstrikes by Saudi led coalition on the northwestern Yemeni province of Hajjah, a security source said Tuesday.

At least 13 people were killed "by mistake" in two airstrikes by Saudi-led coalition on the northwestern Yemeni province of Hajjah, a security source said Tuesday.

"The coalition airstrikes seemed to target a security site in Harad district, but hit an adjacent building instead, killing 13 people and injuring several others," the source, requesting anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency.

The bombed building incorporated a hotel, restaurant and residential apartments, he added.

A satellite TV channel affiliated with the Shiite Houthi militant group has confirmed that the coalition warplanes struck Harad, causing civilian casualties, but the report gave no further details.

The coalition is yet to comment on the assertions.

Since March 25, Houthi positions across Yemen have been subject to frequent attack by warplanes from countries participating in the Saudi-led campaign.

Fractious Yemen has remained in turmoil since last September, when the Houthis overran capital Sanaa, from which they have sought to extend their influence to other parts of the country.

Riyadh says the campaign is in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi – currently in Saudi Arabia – to "save the [Yemeni] people from the Houthi militias."

The Houthis, for their part, have decried the offensive, describing it as unwarranted "Saudi-American aggression."

Some Gulf States accuse Shiite Iran of supporting Yemen's Houthi insurgency.
