Fourteen protestors were detained after police intervened in a march for peace in İstanbul on Sept. 1, internationally observed as World Peace Day. The event, organized by members of the left-wing United June Movement (BHH), began at 7:00 p.m. in Tünel Square, then demonstrators marched along downtown İstanbul's famous İstiklal Avenue, heading toward Galatasaray High School. Upon reaching the gates of the school, the group chanted slogans against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and condemned the clashes taking place between Turkish security forces and Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists in Turkey's Southeast. The group of around 500 was intercepted by police who used water canons and tear gas in an attempt to disperse it. Some demonstrators were physically assaulted by officers, and one journalist, Yasin Akgül from Agence France-Press (AFP), was injured during the incident.
