150 Palestinians Arrested İn East Jerusalem İn June: Ngo

01.07.2015 14:34

Those arrested included 19 women and 60 minors, 13 of whom were under 14.

Around 150 Palestinians were arrested by Israeli security forces in occupied East Jerusalem last month alone, a Palestinian NGO said Tuesday.

"Israeli army and police detained 150 Palestinians in several neighborhoods of occupied East Jerusalem in June," Jawad Siyam, head of the Wadi Hilweh Information Center, told Anadolu Agency.

Among those arrested were 19 women and 60 minors, 13 of whom were under 14 years old, he added.

Most of the arrests took place in Jerusalem's Old City, the village of Silwan, and the Attur, Wadi al-Jouz and Bioet Hanina neighborhoods.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank during the 1967 Middle East War. It later annexed the city of Jerusalem in 1980, claiming it as the capital of the self-proclaimed Jewish state – a move never recognized by the international community.

Sacred to both Muslims and Jews, Jerusalem is home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which for Muslims represents the world's third holiest site. Jews refer to the area as the "Temple Mount," claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.

International law views the West Bank and East Jerusalem as "occupied territories," considering all Jewish settlement building on the land to be illegal.
