2 Senior Egypt Policemen Killed İn Sinai Attack

Two senior Egyptian policemen were killed on Friday by unidentified gunmen in the northeastern Sinai Peninsula, a security source has said.



"Gunmen intercepted a private car carrying two brigadier generals of the anti-riot police in northern Sinai and opened fire on them, killing them instantly," the source told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity.



One of the two policemen belonged to a prominent Sinai tribe, he added, and had been the first Sinai resident to attain such a high rank in Egypt's police apparatus.



The assailants fled the scene following the shooting, the source said, adding that security forces were currently combing the area for them.



Egypt's volatile Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip, has seen a spate of attacks by unknown gunmen since last summer's ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the army.



Since then, the Egyptian armed forces have launched a major offensive against militant groups that it claims are based in the peninsula.
