2014 European Parliament Election

16.04.2014 18:03

More than 1,000 candidates from 25 parties are set to compete in the European Parliamentary elections in Germany.

A total of 1,053 candidates will stand for the 96 seats in the European Parliament allocated to Germany in the European Election on 25 May.

Federal returning officer Roderich Egeler said in Berlin on Wednesday that 327 women will run for a seat in the EU Parliament, and that 61.4 million German citizens and 2.9 million European citizens in Germany were entitled to vote in the polls.

The election is based on proportional representation, meaning the number of seats distributed will depend only on the shares of votes cast for the parties and other political associations, Egeler said.

Altogether, 25 parties and other political associations will run in the 2014 European Election.

The ballot papers will contain 24 nominations for each of the 16 German states.

Candidates of Turkish origin are also running for seats in the European Parliament - four for the Social Democratic Party, three for the Christian Union Parties and one for the Free Democratic Party.

Many small parties are able to win seats in the European Parliament, including far-right and xenophobic ones.
