Within 48 hours, over 20,000 people applied to join the 'Volunteers Platform' created on the official website of the Turkish Prime Minister and presidential candidate, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The website "www.rte.com.tr" was established for contributing to Erdogan's presidential election campaign.

Turkish citizens will go to the polls on 10 August to vote for the twelfth president of the Republic of Turkey. The presidential post had previously been elected by assembly lawmakers.

Most of the candidates are not affiliated with the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, according to party officials.

Volunteers are asked to share comments, distribute handouts, put up posters and visit voters.

Erdogan plans to meet with his volunteers in various regions throughout Turkey. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday in the southern province of Adana during an iftar dinner - the evening fast-breaking meal during Ramadan.

The public campaign for the position will continue up until August 9. If presidential candidates receive less than a 50 percent "a of votes, a second round will take place on 24 August.
