Fast-food franchisor Burger King has closed 89 restaurants in Germany, leaving 3,000 unemployed.
The closures, which were reportedly due to non-compliance with hygiene and poor treatment of staff, left over 3,000 unemployed, the company said on Wednesday.
The decision to close 89 outlets came after some restaurants were already temporarily closed due to breaches of hygiene standards discovered in May.
Investigative journalist Guenter Wallraff and his team had revealed via hidden cameras that there have allegedly been breaches of hygiene standards and mistreatment of staff in outlets owned by Yi-Ko Holding, a franchisee of Burger King
