Israeli authorities on Sunday permitted 30 students from the Gaza Strip to leave the enclave through the Erez border crossing to attend their universities abroad, a Palestinian official has said.
"Due to the closure of the Rafah border crossing [with Egypt], Gazan students have begun to arrange their travels through the Erez crossing, which is under the control of the Israeli authorities," Maher Abu Sabha, the director of the border crossings in Gaza, told The Anadolu Agency.
Abu Sabha said that the number of students that were permitted to leave the country through Erez crossing was "very small when compared to the tens of thousands of humanitarian cases that need to travel for either medical treatment or education."
He added that the Erez crossing is not considered safe by many Palestinians, who fear that they would be arrested by Israeli authorities for "resisting the occupation."
According to the Gaza border crossing agency, some 60,000 humanitarian cases are in desperate need to travel abroad, mainly via the Rafah crossing which links the strip to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
Since Hamas took control of the strip in 2007, Israel sealed off four out of the six crossings under its control, leaving open the Kerem Shalom for commercial crossing and Erez for individuals.
Egypt has tightened its grip on the border with the blockaded Gaza Strip since the ouster of Mohamed Morsi – the country's first freely elected president – by the army in mid-2013.
Repeated crossing closures have made life even more difficult for Gaza's roughly 1.9 million residents, who have groaned under the airtight Israeli blockade.
