4 Dead, 1 Baby Missing İn Landslide İn Indonesia

22.11.2014 15:31

Search for missing 4 month old continues along river in North Sumatra province after parents lose lives.

A landslide left four people dead and a four-month-old missing Saturday following heavy rains on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the National Disaster Management Agency's public affairs chief, told the Anadolu Agency, "the victims included the heads of two households whose homes were buried by landslides and swept by the river."

A search for the baby of a couple killed in the disaster is ongoing along a river village in Central Tapanuli regency of North Sumatra province.

The landslide, which occurred at 01.00 (20.00 Friday Turkish time), destroyed five houses in Sibio Bio village.

Central Tapanuli is prone to landslides, which cause casualties nearly every year – usually among low-income households who reside in disaster-prone areas.

The rainy season in Indonesia began in late October, with the North Sumatra region expected to face threats of flooding and landslides in November to December amid peak rainfall.

Last Friday, two siblings were killed in West Sumatra province when their home collapsed after being hit by an avalanche of mud and debris.

Landslides have caused 267 deaths this year, more than any other natural disaster in Indonesia.
