At least 43 people have been rescued from a fishing boat that sank off the coast of Bangladesh on Thursday.
The local Kutubdia Police Station's officer-in-charge Aungsa Thoyai Marma also confirmed that three brokers smuggling the passengers to Malaysia have been arrested.
The coast guard has since lifted the vessel from the water.
The police have not identified how many are missing but early reports from passengers aid more than 100 people may have been on the boat.
Boats travelling migrants seeking work in Malaysia and Thailand are frequently stopped by Bangladesh authorities, including in November when 600 were captured in the Bay of Bengal.
