5 Syrians With Stolen Passports Detained İn Honduras

19.11.2015 00:48

No indication of any link to terrorist attacks.

Five Syrian men traveling with falsified passports are being detained in Honduras, police confirmed Wednesday.

The men were detained Tuesday in the capital city airport after officials established that the Greek passports they presented had been tampered with to switch the photographs. The documents were stolen in Greece, according to Honduran police.

The men were held overnight by immigration officials in Tegucigalpa and transferred Wednesday to police facilities, where they are being questioned.

"We're confirming their identities," said police spokesman Aníbal Baca.

Police have not established any link between the detainees and any attack. Honduran police are coordinating with national intelligence units and Interpol, Baca said.

The men arrived in Honduras by way of connecting flights through other Latin American countries. They were detained before catching a connecting flight to San Pedro Sula in northwestern Honduras.

From San Pedro Sula, the men are expected to have continued overland to the U.S., police said.

Arriving by plane in South or Central America in order to travel north overland is not without precedent for refugees and migrants from the Middle East and Africa.

Refugees feeling conflict in Syria, and migrants, currently face increased discrimination and xenophobia in the wake of the attacks in Paris. - Nikaragua
