Six Turkish journalists, including columnist and former parliamentarian Nazli Ilicak were remanded in custody in Istanbul Friday in connection with the failed July 15 coup, a judicial source said.
Among the journalists are Bayram Kaya, Hasim Soylemez, Seyid Kilic, Emre Socan and Cuma Ulus.
Ilicak was elected as a member of parliament for the Virtue Party in 1999, but she lost her seat after the party was banned by Turkey's Constitutional Court in 2001.
"Fourteen other journalists facing the same charges are still being investigated," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of not being authorized to speak to the media, said.
Turkey's government has repeatedly said the deadly coup attempt, which martyred more than 230 people and injured nearly 2,200 others, was organized by U.S.-based preacher Fetullah Gulen's followers.
Gulen is also accused of running a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary, forming what is commonly known as the parallel state. -
