The news of Ivkovic's death caused a storm on social media, and Red Star fans are planning to come to İstanbul for another match with fans of Greek team Olympiakos on Dec. 18. Tensions were fanned by a priest at Ivkovic's memorial ceremony who stated that the Serbian had become a martyr to the Orthodox faith, adding, "We have a new Milos Obilic," a reference to the Serbian assassin of Ottoman Sultan Murad I.

Following the memorial service for Ivkovic, a protest was held outside the Turkish embassy in Belgrade. Serbian police have taken strict safety measures outside the embassy.

Meanwhile, the Partizan-Banvit match on Wednesday may have eased tensions, as the Serbian team was greeted with flowers at İstanbul's Atatürk Airport, and the Turkish team held up a banner saying "We are sorry for your loss" at the stadium where the match took place.
