Eight South Sudanese civilians were killed and 20 others injured in a raid by rebels loyal to sacked vice president Riek Machar on a northern town, a local official said Friday.
Machar's rebels raided Renk on Thursday, killing eight civilians, including three children and three women, Kor Shawai, the town's mayor, told Anadolu Agency.
The attack has forced town residents to flee their areas, he said, reiterating that calm was restored to the town by Friday.
AA could not get comment from the pro-Machar camp on the claim.
South Sudan has been shaken by violence since last December, when President Salva Kiir accused Machar of trying to overthrow his regime.
The conflict has already claimed more than 10,000 lives, with the U.N. estimating that some one million South Sudanese have been displaced by the violence.
