9 Civilians Killed By Houthi Shelling İn Yemen's Taizz

26.04.2015 14:03

Nine Yemeni civilians were killed Sunday in random shelling by Shiite Houthi militants that hit residential areas in the central city of Taizz, according to local residents.

Nine Yemeni civilians were killed Sunday in random shelling by Shiite Houthi militants that hit residential areas in the central city of Taizz, according to local residents.

Five civilians were killed after shells landed near a car repair shop in Al-Masbah district in Taizz city, local residents told The Anadolu Agency.

Meanwhile, four other civilians were killed in random Houthi shelling that struck Al-Dhaboua residential area in downtown Taizz, residents added.

This comes as armed clashes continue to rage between Houthi militants and armed tribesmen in several neighborhoods in Taizz.

A tribal source who declined to be named, for his part, told AA that armed tribesmen managed to destroy two Houthi tanks in downtown Taizz.

"Casualties among the Houthi occurred during clashes with armed tribesmen in the same district," the source said, without revealing further details.

Yemen in general has remained in a state of turmoil since 2011 when a popular uprising forced ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down a year later.

Almost one month ago, Saudi Arabia and several other Arab states began striking – from the air – Houthi positions across Yemen.

Saudi Arabia says the strikes come in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi for help against the Houthis, who overran capital Sanaa late last year and have since advanced on other provinces.
