Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that they are accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence with domestic and national solutions to make the railway network suitable for the digital age. Emphasizing that artificial intelligence detects faults before they occur by evaluating the collected data at Automatic Train Inspection Stations, Minister Uraloğlu said, "We are greatly improving maintenance processes by providing remote monitoring and analysis capabilities on railway lines."
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu evaluated the artificial intelligence-based technologies implemented in railways. Stating that the Republic of Turkey State Railways (TCDD) has achieved a significant transformation in railway transportation with its investments in digitalization and artificial intelligence-based technologies, Minister Uraloğlu said, "We are accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence with domestic and national solutions to make Turkey's railway network suitable for the digital age."
THE ERA OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN RAILWAYS WITH AUTOMATIC TRAIN INSPECTION STATION
Stating that the Automatic Train Inspection Station (OTMİ) system developed in collaboration with TCDD and TÜBİTAK is a revolutionary step in railway safety and maintenance processes, Uraloğlu emphasized that this system is integrated with artificial intelligence and continued his remarks as follows:
"In the past, trains were inspected manually in maintenance workshops, but now, thanks to OTMİ, all critical components can be analyzed while in motion. This system, equipped with artificial intelligence-based image processing and sensor systems, scans each part of the train in detail, producing real-time data."
Uraloğlu stated that thanks to this technology, wheel wear, errors in brake discs, axle bearing temperatures, load imbalances, and other mechanical components are analyzed in real-time, saying, "At Automatic Train Inspection Stations, artificial intelligence algorithms evaluate the large data collected, detecting potential faults before they occur and sending early warnings to maintenance teams for preventive interventions. Unexpected failures are prevented, maintenance costs are reduced, and the continuity of train services is maximized. Additionally, we are greatly improving maintenance processes by providing remote monitoring and analysis capabilities on railway lines across Turkey," he said.
SMART SOLUTIONS IN MAINTENANCE PROCESSES
Stating that predictive maintenance systems have also been widespread to continuously monitor railway infrastructure and manage maintenance processes more effectively, Uraloğlu said, "Railway vehicles equipped with special sensors allow for early detection of possible breaks and cracks in the tracks, subsidence, and faults in electrification systems, enabling interventions before failures occur. With this system, operational continuity increases while costs are significantly reduced."
AI-ASSISTED TRAFFIC AND SECURITY MANAGEMENT
Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that safety is one of the top priorities in railway transportation and stated that AI-assisted security solutions have been implemented. Uraloğlu explained, "Artificial intelligence-based analysis systems track the facial movements of train drivers, the duration of eyelid closure, and head position to detect distractions and provide warnings when necessary."
CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF HIGH-SPEED TRAIN LINES AT ERYAMAN MONITORING CENTER
Stating that the Eryaman Monitoring Center, which was established to enhance safety in railways and manage operations seamlessly, continuously monitors the high-speed train lines, Uraloğlu said, "In this center, critical infrastructures such as tunnels, bridges, culverts, and viaducts are monitored 24/7 through smart cameras and sensors."
Uraloğlu noted that thanks to the analysis systems at the Eryaman Monitoring Center, natural disasters such as wind, floods, and earthquakes are scanned in real-time for risk assessment, saying, "At the same time, when any negative situation is detected on the lines through remote monitoring technology, relevant teams are quickly informed, and the intervention time is minimized. The condition of structures such as bridges, culverts, and tunnels in railway infrastructure and superstructure is continuously analyzed, optimizing maintenance processes through early warning systems."
FUTURE RAILWAY TECHNOLOGIES: AUTONOMOUS TRAINS AND DIGITALIZATION
In evaluations regarding the future of railways, Uraloğlu stated that autonomous trains and artificial intelligence-based signaling systems will become widespread in the coming years. Uraloğlu said, "Thanks to AI-assisted energy management systems, our trains will achieve maximum efficiency with the lowest energy consumption. This will reduce both carbon emissions and operating costs."
Finally, Uraloğlu stated that personalized services will be supported by AI-based systems to enhance the passenger experience, saying, "Smart assistants and chatbots will analyze passengers' needs and offer the most suitable travel plans. Passenger comfort will be taken to a much higher level with digitalization."
