A retired police officer, Cengiz Bedir, who is on trial for allegedly killing his estranged wife and son and burying them in a field in the Bağcılar district of Istanbul, has been sentenced to two life sentences without parole.

2 LIFE SENTENCES WITHOUT PAROLE



When asked for his last words, defendant Bedir claimed that his wife and son wanted to kill him and that he regretted his actions. The court panel sentenced the defendant to two life sentences without parole for the crimes of "premeditated murder of a spouse" and "premeditated murder of a descendant." The panel decided to acquit the other defendants, Muhammed Nureddin Sarraç and M. Subhı Muqresh.



WHAT HAPPENED?



In the indictment prepared by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that retired police officer defendant Cengiz Bedir and the victim Zeynep Bedir were married and that they had three children together, including the victim Ömer Faruk Bedir.



The indictment noted that there were disputes between the defendant and his wife and that they had filed for divorce. It was recorded that their relatives reported them missing on March 8, 2024, because they could not reach the victims and the defendant.



It was understood from the indictment that while the defendant Bedir was on his way to his field in Kırklareli on March 9, 2024, he requested help from villagers after his vehicle got stuck in the mud, and it was reported that an investigation was conducted around the area where the vehicle was stuck. It was stated that there were traces of blood and freshly dug soil in the field, and upon inspection, the bodies of the victims were found separated from their heads.



The indictment requested that defendant Cengiz Bedir be punished with life imprisonment for the crimes of "premeditated murder of a spouse" and "premeditated murder of a descendant."



For the other defendants, Muhammed Nureddin Sarraç and M. Subhı Muqresh, separate prison sentences ranging from 6 months to 5 years were requested for the crime of "destroying, concealing, or altering evidence."
