Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Arrives İn Doha

28.11.2014 16:14

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nayhan arrived in Qatari capital Doha on Friday for an unannounced visit, Qatar's official news agency has reported.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nayhan arrived in Qatari capital Doha on Friday for an unannounced visit, Qatar's official news agency has reported.

Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received Al-Nahyan at Doha's main airport, according to the news agency.

The visit came in response to an invitation from the Qatari emir, bin Zayed's office said on Twitter.

Bin Zayed, it added, who is making his first visit to Qatar since the latter's months-long falling out with its Gulf neighbors, plans to discuss relations between Qatar and the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Friday's visit signals further rapprochement between Qatar and other GCC members ahead of an upcoming GCC summit slated for December 9 and 10, which Bahraini King Hamad Bin Issa Al-Khalifa has said would be a "watershed" in Gulf relations.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain have all agreed to send their ambassadors back to Qatar – after a nearly eight-month hiatus – in line with an "understanding" reached by Gulf leaders in Riyad earlier this month.

Relations between Qatar on one hand and the three Gulf nations on the other deteriorated earlier this year over Qatar's support of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood group, which remains the target of a relentless security crackdown by Egypt's military-backed authorities.

Following Morsi's ouster and imprisonment by the Egyptian army last year, a number of his supporters fled to Qatar – which had been a key ally of the Morsi administration – amid a harsh crackdown on dissent by Egypt's new army-backed rulers.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE, by contrast, had been among the first countries to welcome Morsi's ouster by the army last year following opposition protests.

Last December, Egypt's army-installed interim government designated the Brotherhood a "terrorist" organization, with Saudi Arabia following suit three months later.
