A new relaxation has been introduced in the sale of alcohol in Saudi Arabia. In the Sharia-governed country, non-Muslim foreigners with a monthly income of 50,000 riyals or more will be able to shop at the only authorized alcohol sales point in the capital, Riyadh. It will be mandatory to present proof of income to enter the store.
A comprehensive change has been made regarding the alcohol ban that has been in place in Saudi Arabia since 1952. The country, governed by Sharia law, has softened its stance on alcohol by granting controlled access rights to certain foreign nationals.
SPECIAL PERMISSION FOR HIGH-INCOME NON-MUSLIMS
According to information reported by Bloomberg, with the new regulation, non-Muslim foreigners with a monthly income of at least 50,000 riyals will be able to shop at the only authorized alcohol sales point in the capital, Riyadh. To enter the store, a proof of income must be presented, and compliance with a points-based monthly consumption quota is required.
ACCESS TO THE SINGLE STORE IS EXPANDING
The access right, previously granted only to diplomatic personnel and a limited number of foreigners with premium visas, has now been opened to all foreign residents who meet the specified income requirement. This step signifies a significant expansion in the long-standing closed system of alcohol sales in the country.
PART OF REFORM INITIATIVES
The decision is said to be part of Saudi Arabia's large-scale reform program aimed at retaining foreign labor and investors in the country. Additionally, it is stated that new licensed sales points are planned to be opened in major cities like Jeddah and Dhahran by 2026.
