A violent clash in central Afghanistan has killed nine police officers and 36 Taliban militants, the local governor said Wednesday.
"Taliban militants have been fighting the security forces in Sandan area of Pasawand district over the past nine days and security forces launched cleanup operations Tuesday night and so far today nine police have been martyred, 36 rebels have been killed," Sayed Anwar Rahmati, governor of the Ghor province, told Anadolu Agency.
He also admitted that the militants had captured 30 police officers during the clash and that he had requested the central government to send reinforcements.
In an anti-militant operation in the northern Faryab province early this week, Afghan security forces killed 54 militants according to Faryab's governor Mohammadullah Battash.
Since May, Taliban militants have intensified their activities and are actively engaging security forces in parts of the southern Helmand province as well as Kunduz and Faryab in the north.
