Afghan Minister Rescued After 10 Days Of Abduction

24.04.2014 12:49

The kidnappers abandoned the minister and escaped during a relentless police chase.

Ahmad Shah Wahid, Afghanistan's deputy housing minister who was kidnapped 10 days ago in capital Kabul, was rescued by security forces Wednesday night, the country's Interior Ministry confirmed.

"Wahid was found blindfolded in a car in Nejrab district. Security forces started to chase the kidnappers while they were trying to move Wahid to the Tagab district of Kapisa, however they had to abandon Wahid to flee as a result of the relentless police chase," said Ahmed Seddiqi Faqir, Kapisa police chief.

Wahid was kidnapped on the way to his office early in the morning 10 days ago, and the reason for his abduction is not yet known.

The kidnappings of wealthy people for ransom by criminal gangs and by the Taliban are common in Afghanistan, however, the Taliban have denied any involvement in the incident.
