Algerian Party Slams Egypt Court Ruling On Hamas

The Movement for the Society of Peace, Algeria's largest Islamist party, has denounced a recent Egyptian court ruling designating Palestinian faction Hamas a "terrorist" organization.



In a Wednesday statement, the party – which is linked to Algeria's Muslim Brotherhood movement – called on Algiers to ask its diplomats to "rein in the insanity of Egypt's coup authorities."



It said diplomats should also move to shore up the "vestiges of the collective Arab conscience," especially in terms of the Palestinian cause.



The party called on the Cairo-based Arab League to reject the court ruling.



On Feb. 28, an Egyptian court designated Hamas a "terrorist" organization.



The legal request was filed by an Egyptian lawyer who accused Hamas of carrying out attacks on Egyptian troops in the Sinai Peninsula and contributing to Egypt's current instability.



The ruling sent shockwaves across the Hamas-run Gaza Strip and stunned Islamist parties across the region. 



In January, an Egyptian court likewise designated the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' armed wing, a "terrorist" organization.
