The leader of the DEVA Party, Ali Babacan, called for an extraordinary meeting of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) due to the recent increase in forest fires. Babacan also suggested the establishment of a research commission in the TBMM to investigate the causes of the forest fires and the necessary measures to be taken.

DEVA Party Chairman Ali Babacan called for an extraordinary meeting of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) regarding the forest fires and also suggested the establishment of a research commission.

In a press conference held in Van, DEVA Party Chairman Ali Babacan made striking statements regarding the forest fires that have occurred in Turkey in recent weeks.

Babacan stated, "We are going through days where forest fires have become very frequent and intense, especially in the last two months. Our lungs are burning. We have lost many of our citizens. There are forest martyrs who lost their lives while fighting the fires. There are also civilian citizens who lost their lives while working in fire extinguishing efforts. I once again wish God's mercy upon all of them from here. I extend my condolences to their families."

"THERE IS CONFUSION REGARDING THE CAUSE OF THE FIRES"

Babacan said: "When it comes to forest fires in our country, the first thing that comes to mind is climate change and global warming. However, we also need to talk about those that arise from accidents, involuntarily, but due to negligence. Right now, this process is completely under the control of the government. Because the process related to the fire is not operating very transparently, there is serious uncertainty and confusion in our country regarding the cause of these fires. But after the fire breaks out, we ask what the cause was? There are many unknowns in these matters. We do not find it appropriate to manage democracy solely with the government's administration and its own oversight mechanisms.

CALL FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY MEETING OF THE TBMM

You know that one of the duties of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey is legislation. But another important duty is oversight. Because in every country where democracies exist, parliaments have a very important oversight function. We call upon the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to fulfill this oversight function and to conduct a comprehensive investigation regarding these forest fires.

In other words, the parliament must hold an extraordinary meeting, and a research commission regarding the forest fires should be established. We see great benefit in this commission working with the preparation phase, the precaution phase, and the investigation phase of how the fires started, to produce measures and precautions on how to prevent fires in Turkey."
