Arınç: Defaming Police Force Very Dangerous Move

Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç said he trusts Turkey's police force, in response to a front-page story in the Akşam daily claiming that a number of police officers have decided not to follow their superiors' orders regarding May 1 Labor Day celebrations in an effort to delegitimize the government.

At a press conference after a Cabinet meeting on Monday, Arınç said the allegations were very ugly and dangerous. Responding to questions from journalists, Arınç was asked about a smear campaign being conducted by a pro-government media outlet that claims a part of the police force is operating as a “parallel structure.”

“It is a very ugly and dangerous thing. No doubt you are asking about what the daily wrote, but you are asking that question in an environment where the rule of law is in effect and a legitimate government is ruling Turkey. It gives me goose bumps to hear claims that some police officers would put the government in a difficult situation by neglecting their duties and helping protesters on Labor Day. I don't know which daily it was, or why such news was reported. If there is evidence supporting the claims, the government will do what is necessary. However, I trust that the Turkish police force [will] obey the laws and believe that they [will] follow the instructions given by their chiefs with a strong sense of mission,” he said.

Stressing that the allegations are reminiscent of pre-1980 incidents -- in which a number of police officers were polarized as being either leftist or rightist, inciting societal clashes and leading to a coup d'état in 1980 -- Arınç said: “We would never allow such an atmosphere to be created in the police force. We [the government] will not tolerate even one police officer considering going against the government's or police chiefs' orders. If we realize that there is something [like that] going on in the organization, we will dismiss those individuals.”

Considering whether the article's author intended to incriminate certain police officers and confuse the minds of the people, Arınç said there is only one thing an honorable person can do in terms of proving the claim: “The author of the article should present documents addressing the accusations of police officers plotting against the government by allegedly planning to challenge their police chiefs. Writers should pinpoint particular names instead of labeling the entire organization. Those who have heard of police officers with such plans should reveal the issue so that we can do what is required. We [would] never allow such a thing [to happen].”
