Three people were killed in a shooting at a hair salon in Uppsala, Sweden, last night. The masked assailant fled the scene on an electric scooter.
Gunshots were heard at a hair salon located in Vaksala Square, about 60 kilometers from the capital Stockholm. According to eyewitnesses, a masked individual entered the salon and opened fire before escaping on an electric scooter.
One eyewitness described, "I first heard a gunshot, then screams erupted," while another witness said, "I saw the suspect turn the corner, and then the gunshots started."
Police spokesperson Magnus Jansson Klarin confirmed in a statement, "We can confirm that three people have died. Efforts to identify the victims are ongoing. We have received reports of a masked individual wearing dark clothing and riding an electric scooter, and we are searching for this person."
Extensive security measures have been implemented at the scene, and police are investigating the motive behind the murder. According to Swedish public television SVT, one of the deceased was a suspect in an investigation into a planned attack on a relative of gang leader Ismail Abdo.
Uppsala Mayor Erik Pelling expressed, "I am both shocked and very saddened by these events. At the same time, I am angry that this can happen. It is a great disappointment that we have to live with such crimes and that we cannot effectively solve the problem."
Sweden has been battling gang-related violence for the past decade. Armed attacks and bombings have increased, particularly due to the power struggle among drug gangs in and around the capital Stockholm. More than 30 bomb attacks occurred in the country in January of this year.
In February, a shooting at an adult education center in the city of Orebro resulted in the deaths of 10 people. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's admission that "we have no control over the wave of violence" highlights the seriousness of the situation in the country.
The attack in Uppsala occurred just one day before a spring festival expected to attract over 100,000 visitors to the city. The police announced that they would increase security measures during the festival.
