Armin Veh Quits As Stuttgart Coach

Former Bundesliga-winning coach Armin Veh has resigned from his position at Stuttgart, after his team's loss to Augsburg on Sunday. The traditionally strong club from southern Germany is now coming last in the league.



Stuttgart coach Armin Veh has quit his role at the club, effective immediately, after the Bundesliga side plummeted to last position again on the table on Sunday night. The 1-0 home loss by Veh's team against Augsburg was unlucky as it was marked by an early sending off of one of the players. But it wasn't enough for Veh to stay.



"Taking this step was very hard for me, because the club and the team mean a lot to me personally," Veh said in a statement on the club's website on Monday morning. "But I had to act, because I'm convinced that this is the right step."



"The team is better than it's position on the table, nine points from 12 games is just not enough. I'm responsible for that," he added, before going on to thank the fans and club management.



Veh still had club's support



Club president Bernd Wahler said that Armin Veh had quit his post on Sunday evening, shortly after the loss to Augsburg.



"He's convinced that a change in coach is necessary for the team to be successful again," Wahler said. "We respect Armin's decision, although we were still convinced about him and his work, even after yesterday's game."



Stuttgart are now missing both a head coach and a sports director, after Fredi Bobic was sacked in September for failing to "put a team together that achieves a position in the league that matches the club's budget." Stuttgart is yet to name a replacement for Veh.



The 53-year-old returned to Stuttgart at the start of this season, after coaching various other Bundesliga teams over the last five years. His biggest success at Stuttgart was guiding the team to the Bundesliga title in 2007.
