At least 28 people across central China have been left dead or missing due to flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall over the last four days, state media reported Tuesday.
The publicity office of Shangcheng county, Henan province, said five people had been confirmed dead, while almost 800 others were evacuated as 100 buildings collapsed and more than 200 suffered damage.
An estimated direct economic loss of 305 million yuan (around $49.9 million) was recorded, with the rough conditions damaging 6,700 hectares of crops and impacting power and communications.
In Shaanxi province to the west, floods left four people dead and nine others missing in Foping county, which suffered around 170 million yuan in losses as well as widespread power and communication disruptions.
To the south, Sichuan province reported its worst floods since 1949, with two people losing their lives in landslides in Nanjiang county and another in Pengxi county. Around 263,000 people in 48 townships were forced to evacuate their homes, according to Xinhua.
Meanwhile, two people were confirmed dead Monday in floods and landslides in Anhui province's Jinzhai county, while five others remained missing. - Pekin
