At least four workers were killed and 16 others injured Wednesday in an oil rig explosion and fire in the Gulf of Mexico, a state-run oil company said.
Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, said 300 workers from the Abkatun Permanente platform, located on the west side of the Yucatan Peninsula, were evacuated after the fire began early Wednesday morning.
Fire boats worked to put out the flames as of late Wednesday afternoon, the company said in a Twitter post.
The company has not said what caused the explosion that triggered the fire but said it started in the dehydration and pumping area of the platform.
It remains unknown whether significant amounts of oil leaked into the Gulf.
The offshore oil drilling complex that contains the Abkatun platform produced less than 300,000 barrels daily in 2013, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
