Au Probe Begins Mission İn S. Sudan

22.04.2014 20:19

A recently established African Union (A.U.) commission of inquiry, tasked with investigating rights abuses committed during South Sudan's current conflict, has begun its first field mission in the violence wracked country, the A.U. said in a Tuesday statement.

A recently-established African Union (A.U.) commission of inquiry, tasked with investigating rights abuses committed during South Sudan's current conflict, has begun its first field mission in the violence-wracked country, the A.U. said in a Tuesday statement.

"This mission comes as part of A.U. efforts to end the conflict that broke out in South Sudan in mid-December 2013 and ensure the emergence of an environment of sustainable peace that would enable a sustainable democratic culture to emerge in the country," Tuesday's statement read.

The commission was set up early last month by the pan-African body to investigate human rights violations and other abuses committed during South Sudan's five-month-old conflict.

The five-member panel, headed by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, is expected to meet South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and his senior aides, along with Kiir's sacked vice president, Riek Machar, and members of the latter's entourage, according to the statement.

South Sudan has been shaken by violence since last December, when Kiir accused Machar of trying to overthrow his regime.

The conflict has already claimed more than 10,000 lives, with the U.N. estimating that some one million South Sudanese have already been displaced by the violence.
