Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning in the Sunni Muslim world, has denied reports about the resignation of its Grand Imam, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb.
In a statement, Al-Azhar's media center described reports about Al-Tayeb's resignation as "part of a systematic campaign against Al-Azhar."
These rumors are part of "a campaign to insult Al-Azhar's sheikhdom," the statement said.
The statement "ed al-Tayeb as saying that he is "not the kind of person who would abandon his duty and that he will remain in the sheikdom to serve the faith, the homeland and Al-Azhar."
Al-Tayeb, 69, was named Al-Azhar Grand Imam in March 2010.
He has supported the military ouster of elected Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in mid-2013.
