Bahçeli Vows To Call Those Responsible To Account For Media Raids, Oppression

Strongly criticizing a recent operation targeting the media outlets, offices, residences and a university belonging to Koza İpek Holding, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli has promised to call those responsible for the raid and other instances of pressure on the media to account.
Responding to questions by reporters in İstanbul on Friday, Bahçeli said the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) which now leads an interim government after its 13 year of rule has long oppressed the media. “The media is not being pressured but oppressed today by the government. We are now witnessing an example of this today,” he said.

The MHP chairman also vowed to call those who pressured the media to account if his party comes to power following the Nov. 1 elections. “I would like to declare from İstanbul that we will bring those responsible for this lawlessness and pressure on the media to account,” he said.

In what is seen as yet another blow to press freedom in Turkey, auditors accompanied by a police escort conducted a raid on the offices of Koza İpek Holding in Ankara on Tuesday morning, with simultaneous raids on subsidiaries of the group carried out elsewhere. The Turkish dailies Bugün and Millet, TV stations Bugün TV and Kanaltürk and the website BGNNews.com are all subsidiaries of the İpek Media Group. (Cihan/Today’s Zaman)
