Bahrain Says Arrested 28, Foiled 'Terrorist Plots'

28.04.2015 20:48

Bahraini authorities said Tuesday that they had arrested 28 people in what they described as a "preemptive strike" that contributed to foiling a number of "terrorist acts."

Bahraini authorities said Tuesday that they had arrested 28 people in what they described as a "preemptive strike" that contributed to foiling a number of "terrorist acts."

Bahrain's Interior Ministry published a list of 13 attacks on its website, some of which targeted policemen, between January and April 2014, saying they had been carried out by those arrested.

"The ministry arrested 28 people, some of whom are convicted terrorist elements serving out sentences ranging from life in prison to the revoking of citizenship and other terror charges," the ministry said on its website.

"Some of those arrested have participated in more than one act of vandalism or terrorism, through plotting and carrying out serious attacks that seek to destabilize the country," the ministry said.

The ministry described the spate of arrests as a "preemptive strike" that had contributed to foiling a number of "terrorist acts."

Bahrain has been rocked by political turmoil since 2011. The four years since have seen sporadic attacks on security personnel in the Gulf statelet.

Authorities blame the Shiite opposition Wefaq group for the unrest, but the latter says it peacefully calls for the establishment of a "constitutional regime" in the kingdom.
