A noteworthy response came from Tuncer Bakırhan, Co-Chair of the DEM Party, to the CHP's calls for street action. Bakırhan stated, "We are not the activist base of the CHP. We support them, but we will not take to the streets for this; we have bigger tasks ahead of us."
After Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained in the corruption and terrorism investigation, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made a "street" call. As protests flared up following İmamoğlu's arrest, the main address of the demonstrations became Saraçhane, where the İBB headquarters is located.
DEM PARTY'S COUNTER TO ÖZEL
Many protesters were detained during the clashes. A notable response to CHP leader Özel's street call came from the DEM Party. DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan stated in a program he attended that they would not take to the streets for CHP, as they have bigger issues to address.
"WE ARE NOT CHP'S PROTESTER BASE"
Bakırhan used the following expressions: "We are not CHP's protester base. Our party does not have such a thing. We criticize this decision, but we have our own, different issue that goes beyond this. We are trying to organize social peace.
We have a serious intensity that goes beyond these issues. We are trying to socialize peace. They should not conduct the struggle with İmamoğlu through us; we did not support İmamoğlu, urban reconciliation is something else."
