A stampede during a Hindu ritual in Bangladesh has killed at least 10 people on Friday.
According to local police inspector Nazrul Islam, the devotees were part of a crowd involved in the ritual Asthami bath in the Brahmaputra river -- which flows from India -- in the area of Langalbandh, an area considered sacred by Hindus, some 20 kilometers from the capital Dhaka.
"Hundreds of devotees have been gathered since Thursday night for taking bath in the river," said Islam. "Most of the deceased are elderly persons."
Police said they are taking the bodies to the local morgue to handover to the families of the deceased.
Hindu devotees gather in Langalbandh every year there for a two-day festival called Ashtami Snan, which also draws pilgrims from India and Nepal.
