More than 1,000 protesters gathered in Brussels early Friday to express their anger against the EU's plans to negotiate a free-trade agreement with the U.S.
Farmers and trade unionists set off firecrackers and blocked roads with tractors outside the European Commission building, hours after European Union leaders gathered in Brussels on Thursday for a summit.
Negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership were on the summit agenda.
The European Commission claims the pact will remove trade barriers and make it easier to buy and sell goods between the U.S. and the EU.
However, critics argue it will allow corporations to avoid national laws in several countries, posing a threat to the rule of law and public services.
