Chinese car manufacturer BYD surpassed Tesla in 2025 by increasing electric vehicle sales and earned the title of 'the world's largest electric vehicle seller.' BYD reached 4.6 million vehicle sales, while Tesla's sales declined.

Chinese car manufacturer BYD has become "the world's largest electric vehicle seller" by surpassing American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla in 2025.

BYD SOLD 4.6 MILLION VEHICLES

According to the report published by the company in 2025, BYD's sales of electric vehicles classified as "new energy vehicles (NEV)", which include rechargeable, battery-powered, hybrid, and fuel cell electric vehicles, reached 4.6 million with a 7.7% increase during this period.

OUTPACED TESLA

Within NEV sales, the sales of rechargeable battery electric vehicles (EV) rose to 2.25 million with an annual increase of 28.7%, while its closest competitor, Tesla, which is the global leader in the sector, announced that its 2025 sales had decreased by 8.6% year-on-year to 1.63 million. Thus, BYD, headquartered in Shenzhen, China, earned the title of "the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer."

The company, founded by Chinese billionaire Wang Chuanfu, was actually in the position of "the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer," but since it also produced rechargeable hybrid vehicles, it was behind Tesla, which only manufactures fully electric vehicles, in terms of pure electric vehicle sales.
