Birdwatchers Caught Up İn Philippine Gun Battle

14.02.2015 11:33

Seven foreigners escape battle between army and communist insurgents.

Seven foreign birdwatchers narrowly escaped death after being caught up in a firefight between Philippine troops and communist guerrillas, local media reported Saturday.

Three Britons, three Danes and an Australian were trekking near Mount Kitanglad in Bukidnon province on the southern island of Mindanao on Friday when they were caught up in a skirmish between the army's 1st Special Forces Battalion and fighters from the New People's Army, MindaNews said.

Daniel Somera, from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said all seven were unhurt, contrary to earlier reports that one was killed. A Filipino guide was wounded in the arm.

Aj. Jennan Montealto, a spokesman for the 4th Infantry Division, told MindaNews the soldiers were hunting rebels who had killed a soldier in fighting three days previously.

With more than 125 species of birds, Mount Kitanglad is a favorite birdwatching destination.

The New People's Army is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. It has been waging a guerilla war since 1969. Although designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. and EU, it is in stalled peace talks with the government.
