An explosion has ripped through a bus station outside Nigeria's capital Abuja, with many people feared dead. The blast comes one day after suspected Islamist militants killed dozens in the country's northeast. The blast occurred Monday morning at the Nyanyan Motor Park, just outside the capital, Manzo Ezekiel of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) told reporters. "Rescue teams are already on ground. There were so many people there at that time, so we think there must have been some injuries," he added. Charles Otegbade, head of search and rescue at NEMA, said, "We have been able to bring some of the dead to the morgue and some injured have been taken to the hospital." He added that his team had not yet been able to provide details on the number of casualties. The cause of the blast is still unknown.

Boko Haram Islamists have been waging a bloody insurgency in the country's northeast since 2009 that has killed thousands of people and forced many more to flee to other parts of Nigeria.

In one of its most prominent attacks, the group carried out a suicide car bombing at a United Nations building in the capital in 2011 that killed at least 26 people.

The blast comes one day after suspected Islamist militants killed at least 60 people in an attack on several villages in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state.
