Bosnia: Five Detained İn War Crimes İnvestigation

04.03.2015 13:03

Five men held on suspicion of carrying out crimes against civilians during Bosnian War.

Five men have been detained on suspicion of carrying out crimes against civilians during the Bosnian War in 1992.

The five people – all Bosnian Serbs – were detained late Tuesday night by officers from the State Investigation and Protection Agency, or SIPA, Bosnia's domestic intelligence service.

Three of the individuals are identified by police only as M.I., born in 1959, D.L., born in 1956 and Z.I., born in 1968. The trio was held on suspicion of committing "war crimes against the civilian population."

Two other men – B.P., born in 1962 and V.Z., born in 1965 – were detained on suspicion of committing "crimes against humanity", in Rogatica in 1992.

The move came after SIPA detained four people in northern Bosnia on Dec. 23 and two people in the northern city of Bihac and the capital, Sarajevo, on 17 Feb.

The detained persons are to be questioned at the Prosecutor's Office after an official criminal investigation by SIPA ends.

Since the end of the conflict, hundreds of Bosniak families continue to search for missing people among the large numbers of civilians who were killed and thrown into mass graves around the country.

A total of 8,400 people still remain missing after the war, according to the Institute for Missing Persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
