26.07.2014 19:33

The court sentenced Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Yasser Mehrez to two years in prison, accusing him of participating in unauthorized protests in Giza province, west of the capital Cairo, and inciting violence.

an Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced a spokesman of the Muslim Brotherhood to two years in jail, after accusing him of participating in unauthorized protests and inciting violence, a judicial source said.

The source, who asked not to be named, added that the court sentenced Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Yasser Mehrez to two years in prison, accusing him of participating in unauthorized protests in Giza province, west of the capital Cairo, and inciting violence.

Another Egyptian court, meanwhile, adjourned until August 7 the trial of 188 people on charges of breaking into a police station in Gaza on August 17 last year and killing several policemen inside.

Prosecutors accused the 188 defendants of sabotage, endangering the security of society and premeditated killing on August 17, three days after the authorities had violently dispersed two sit-ins in support of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in the Egyptian capital Cairo and Giza province.

Hundreds of backers of the ousted president were killed in the sit-in dispersals and thousands of others injured, according to government data and reports by human rights groups.

Egypt has started an intensive crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, the movement from which Morsi hails, since the military moved to oust Morsi on July 3 last year. Thousands of Brotherhood leaders, members and sympathizers were put in jail since then.
