Bugün daily columnist Nuh Gönültaş, whose name was on a list of journalists to be detained in a government-backed police operation on Dec. 14, was released after testifying to a prosecutor at the Çağlayan Courthouse on Friday.

Gönültaş, who pro-government media claimed had fled the country after a prosecutor included him on a list of people to be detained, returned to Turkey on Thursday and arrived at the courthouse on Friday to deliver his testimony. The prosecutor decided to release Gönültaş after his testimony was completed on Friday.

The columnist had arrived at İstanbul Atatürk Airport at 1 a.m. on Thursday, returning from Russia.

Speaking to the Cihan news agency at the airport, Gönültaş said he had not been trying to flee Turkey and that the prosecutor of the case invited him to testify on Friday. “I'd implied before I left that I would be back. Would I go to Moscow if I intended to flee?” Gönültaş said.
He said that he traveled to Russia in order to closely examine the financial crisis in the country.

“They said that I had escaped to the United States. I didn't escape. I went to Moscow. They even said that a red notice was going to be issued against me. None of these claims are true,” he said in response to claims about him raised by pro-government media outlets.

In response to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan saying he believed that “one or two” journalists had “fled” the country, Gönültaş said: “It is a shame that the president uttered such words. He is acting like the prosecutor or judge of this case.”

Turkey's top-selling newspaper, the Zaman daily, and a popular national TV network, Samanyolu TV, were subjected to a police raid on Dec. 14, as part of a government-orchestrated crackdown on critical independent media outlets in Turkey.

A total of 31 people -- mostly high-ranked media personnel, directors and producers of popular television serials, and former police officers -- were taken into custody by the police.
Ekrem Dumanlı, editor-in-chief of Zaman, and Samanyolu Broadcasting Group General Manager Hidayet Karaca are among those who were detained.
