Bulgaria's Government Quits Amid Ongoing Protests

Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski has submitted his government's resignation to the country's National Assembly following protests over the nomination of media mogul Delyan Peevski to head the national security agency.



The move on Wednesday came after thousands of people had staged continuous protests in Bulgaria since June 14 last year, demanding the resignation of the Socialist-led government.



The Parliament is expected to vote on the resignation on Thursday.



Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has said he would appoint a caretaker government on August 6 ahead of early elections on October 5.



The Oresharski government will serve until August 5, despite the resignation.



The first attacks on the parliament in Bulgaria started with a "democratization process" following the collapse of communist dictatorship in 1989.



The building was firebombed during a protest in 1990 and demonstrators broke windows and doors at the parliament in 1997.
