Butterflies Bid Farewell To Life By Death Dance In Western Turkey

White little butterflies, also known on-day flies, began their death dance in western Turkish province of Edirne across the River Tunca. People who arrived in the region to iftar (fast breaking meal) amazed when they run into the amazing natural show paid by butterflies. While people watched them carefully and a great deal of admiration, they also lived deep sorrow when they saw crushed white flowers under the vehicles.

Death macabre or death dance is performed by white flowers nowadays in Edirne like every year in Sakarya, can be described as also a somber bidding farewell ceremony to life for them. White little butterflies, is known as one-day flies, generally seen in northwestern Turkish province of Sakarya in every July and are known their farewell dance or death dance performed by them over Sakarya River, nowadays also can be seen western Turkish province of Edirne.

When all butterflies flock across the River Tunca one can liken theme as if a heavy fall of snow.

Despite they cannot be seen during the day light, with the coming of the night, they flock to the lighting columns which lie across the River Tunca and begins their death dance, the term is used for them due to their one day life time, so indeed they live only one day and dies at the end of the night.

Abdülhekim Kızmaz, a resident, said since one week the white flowers have been monitoring by local residents. “The death dance performance does continue only 1.5 hour,” added Kızmaz.

Nazgül Odabaş, another resident, living in the region said the dance is magnificent but at the same time is very saddening. “I watched them on television before but here, I personally witnessed,” noted Odabaş.

Ayşen Yasar stated that I watched them on television. Personally I witnessed them for the first time in my lifetime. “I had heard that little white butterflies live only one day. All my information is that. They will die after living only one day,” noted Yaşar.
