The centrist Call of Tunisia party won 85 seats in last week's parliamentary election, while the Islamist Ennahda movement garnered 69 seats, Tunisia's electoral commission announced Thursday.
Commission chairman Chafik Sersar said that the Call of Tunisia, led by former prime minister Beji Caid el Sebsi, won 85 seats in the 217-member National Assembly.
The Islamist Ennahda movement came second with 69 seats followed by the liberal Free Patriotic Union led by businessman Slim Riahi with 16 seats and leftist Popular Front with 15 seats, Sersar told a press conference.
Over 60 percent of Tunisia's 5.2 million eligible voters turned up for Sunday's parliamentary polls, the first since a 2011 uprising ousted long-serving president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.
The prevalence of the Call of Tunisia party, which includes some Ben Ali-era officials, came as a surprise to some observers, given that Ennahda, led by Islamist leader Rachid al-Ghannouchi, had won a majority of seats in Tunisia's constitution-drafting assembly in a late 2011 vote held following Ben Ali's ouster.
In order to form a government, the Call of Tunisia now must put together an electoral coalition of at least 109 assembly seats.
