Cambodia May Forge Partnership With Oıc

25.11.2014 15:45

Foreign minister declares interest in working more closely with the 57 Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states.

Cambodia could become the next country to forge a partnership with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, it was reported Tuesday.

China's national news agency Xinhua reported that Foreign Minister Hor Namhong met with Kuwait's ambassador to Cambodia, Dherar Naser Al Tuwaijr, after which he said there is interest in working more closely with the 57 OIC member states.

"Since there are a lot of Muslims living in Cambodia, the country wants to create closer cooperation with the member states of the OIC," Namhong was "ed as saying.

Namhong put the number of Muslims in Cambodia at between 500,000 and 600,000 - although more are thought to be on their way with an Australian plan to resettle refugees - many of them Muslim - from its detention centers in the Southeast Asian nation.

Officials at the Kuwaiti Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not be reached.
