Canaries Aim For 3 Points Against Gençler Ahead Of BJK Derby

24.10.2014 19:09

When the Yellow Canaries welcome Gençlerbirliği in their week seven Spor Toto Super League encounter on Saturday evening, they will be looking to punish the Ankara club simply for being the first team to show up since Fenerbahçe lost to Galatasaray last weekend. The derby did not go well for Fenerbahçe, and the club wants to make amends -- and the points necessary to keep it in the running for the championship. After the 2-1 loss to its greatest rivals, the Canaries are in fifth place with 10 points, while Galatasaray is at second with 13, one point behind leader Beşiktaş with 14. Next week, Fenerbahçe will have a tough away match against Beşiktaş, so the club also has that derby looming on the horizon. But, because they have been banned from European competition, the Canaries have nothing to think about besides the Super League. Perhaps that will help İsmail Kartal and his men focus, which is an absolute must, because Gençlerbirliği is not doing much worse than they are. The Ankarans

The Ankarans may be a clear underdog, but they have the potential to embarrass the Canaries if they are not paying attention.

Gençlerbirliği has not won in two weeks, coming off of a 0-0 draw at home against Kayseri Erciyesspor and a 1-0 loss to Sivasspor. Coach İrfan Buz is looking to prevent such results from becoming a trend.

Victory or bust

“Yes, we lost the Galatasaray match, but we cannot get hung up on that. We have to turn the page,” Senegal striker Moussa Sow said. “We know what we want this season. This week we must earn three points and win in front of our fans. Later we have a match against Beşiktaş. But we must consider the matches one at a time. We cannot forget that,” he added.

With eight points, Gençlerbirliği would overtake Fenerbahçe if it happened to pull off an upset in the Canaries' Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium. And that would be unforgivable. Fenerbahçe supporters are already beginning to grumble about their team's performance and doubt the abilities of coach Kartal, who replaced Ersun Yanal, the coach who led the club to the championship last year.

Chairman Aziz Yıldırım tried to assuage the fans' fears in a statement issued on the club's website earlier this week. “Relax, we are going to be champion again this season,” he said, addressing fans. “Support coach İsmail, he has been living with you for a long time,” he added.

Down and out

Sow has just returned to action following an injury. He came on for the last three minutes of the Galatasaray derby and is likely to be in Fenerbahçe's starting lineup against Gençler. Two other recent returnees are defensive midfielders Caner Erkin and Mehmet Topal.

However, Portugal defender Bruno Alves will be absent after receiving a two-match ban for a dangerous play that landed his cleats between Galatasaray's Blerim Dzemaili's shoulder blades last weekend. Egemen Korkmaz is still out as well, so Kartal may be fielding a considerably weakened defense.

Whether or not that will allow the Red and Blacks' Bogdan Stancu, Uğur Çiftçi or Berat Tosun to put a goal or two into Fenerbahçe's net is anyone's guess.

The match kicks off at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The referee will be Özgür Yankaya.

One-time champion Bursaspor heads to Super League newcomer and last-place holder Balıkesirspor at the same time. At 4 p.m. Roberto Carlos' Sivasspor hopes to creep away from its position near the relegation zone with a win over Çaykur Rizespor at home.
