Chief Prosecutor İn Kampala Terror Bombings Shot Dead

30.03.2015 22:33

By Halima Athumani.

Joan Kagezi, the chief prosecutor in the 2010 terror bombings in Ugandan capital Kampala, has been gunned down.

"I have just spoken to the Director of Criminal Investigations Grace Akullo and she has confirmed that Joan was gunned down," Jane Kajuga, spokesperson for the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, told The Anadolu Agency on Monday.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the chief prosecutor was driving back home when she was shot dead.

"She had reached a hump along the road and as she slowed down, people who were trailing her on a motor cycle shot her dead," Onyango told AA.

"We suspect this was a planned assassination for her role in the trial."

According to police, the chief prosecutor had been shot in the head.

"The Police are currently at the scene including the anti-terror unit squad to pick up any evidence on the shooting," Onyango said.

Kagezi has been the lead prosecutor in the trial of 12 people suspected of masterminding terrorist bombings in July 2010 in Kampala, in which 76 people had been killed.

The Somali Al-Shabaab militant group had claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The trial was scheduled to resume on Tuesday, but it remains unclear whether this will happen or not.
